Dear Duke University:
Thank you all for the outpour of support and response to the wake and aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
Many of you have asked, “Are there ways we can help?”
One, an often overlooked fact is that there is a critical need for blood. Over 380 blood drives across the East Coast have been canceled because of Hurricane Sandy, resulting in a shortfall of more than 12,800 units of blood and platelets. Naturally, the need for blood increases because of such a disaster. Duke Red Cross is partnering with Kappa Kappa Gamma and Kappa Alpha Order in hosting a blood drive on November 27, 28, and 29 in Von Canon rooms of the Bryan Center. We ask that you sign up and register as a donor on redcrossblood.org or at the table on the plaza this coming week between Monday, November 12, 2012 to Friday, November 16, 2012. For those who would like to find out more, please email@example.com.
Two, our Disaster Relief and Preparedness Committee are hosting a bake sale this Monday, November 12, 2012. We are fundraising this money towards funding the local economy of the areas affected by Sandy and to supply our volunteers in helping at those sites. Please contact Emily Harris at Emilyh131@gmail.com and Jenny Zhao at Jennifer.firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Three, the American Red Cross would like several Disaster Action Teams from Duke formed to not only respond to local disasters, but also to directly travel to the areas of Hurricane Sandy and volunteer there. These Disaster Action Teams consist of 3-4 members along with an “Activator”, whom will activate credit cards and other funding sources from Red Cross to help out the families affected by Sandy. For those of you interested, please respond to email@example.com, and we will put you in touch with American Red Cross staff in filling out the paperwork and get trained to act.
We thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to show compassion for those affected and show we Blue Devils can stand united to tackle this crisis. If you would like to personally talk, do not be afraid to reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org.
